Adequate knowledge is defined to be no less than level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.<br \/>\nFulfillment of this requirement is met by the acquisition of a title\/certification issued by an institution of public education\/educational institution or a certification issued by an authorized\/recognized certifying body.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">How to take the exams abroad\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nCertification exams can be taken abroad. They are administered by the Italian cultural Institutes or other authorized institutions. In New York, the Italian Cultural Institute offers CILS exams (on behalf of the Universit\u00e0 per Stranieri di Siena) twice a year &#8211; in the first half of June and in the first half of December of each year. A registration fee is required in order to take the exam.\u00a0\u00a0More information is available at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cils.unistrasi.it\/home.asp\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Universita&#8217; per Stranieri di Siena\u00a0<\/span><\/a>website.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"exam\"><\/a><em>CILS Exams at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Exam dates in 2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; June 16, 2026, all levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) &#8211; Registration CLOSED<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; December 3, 2026, all levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) &#8211; Registration from September 7 to October 16, 2026<\/p>\n<p>Please note that no <em>B1 c<\/em>\u00a0level is currently available at this location <a href=\"https:\/\/iicnewyork.esteri.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Livello-B1-standard-vs-B1-c-updated.pdf\">differences between B1 standard and B1 c levels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>*** Additional exam dates may still be available in other locations. The final diploma is sent by courier from the University of Siena to the Institute 3 to 6 (or more) months after the publication of the results. If there are fewer than 8 applications, the exam will not take place and the fee(s) will be refunded.
