A Farewell to Arms, in short, is one of the books I want to go on living with, and I wish it would never end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is what Elio Vittorini wrote in a letter to Ernest Hemingway on March 12, 1949, speaking about A Farewell to Arms.<\/p>\n<p>There are books that, once encountered, ask us to remain close to them.<br \/>\nThey accompany us over time and speak about who we are, the choices we make, and how we have arrived where we are.<\/p>\n<p>A book is an encounter\u2014with a story and with the person who wrote it. Sometimes with someone we might never have chosen to listen to in real life; at other times with a distant brother or sister we didn\u2019t know we had.<\/p>\n<p>Because books can do this: shorten distances, reveal connections, dismantle barriers, and travel across the waves of time.<\/p>\n<p>From this idea comes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iicnewyork.esteri.it\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=37283&amp;action=edit&amp;lang=en&amp;admin_bar=1\"><strong>Inkwaves<\/strong><\/a>, the literary series conceived by the Italian Cultural Institute of New York in collaboration with the Alferj literary agency.<\/p>\n<p>A dialogue between Italian and American writers, invited to reflect on a book written in English or Italian that has profoundly influenced their writing and their lives.<\/p>\n<p>They will be joined by American scholars, researchers, translators, and publishers.<\/p>\n<p>Three events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chiara Barzini<\/strong> &#8211; The White Album by Joan Didion &#8211; April 6, 2026 &#8211; 6:00 PM <a href=\"https:\/\/iicnewyork.esteri.it\/en\/gli_eventi\/calendario\/inkwaves-chiara-barzini-will-reflect-on-the-white-album-by-joan-didion\/\">RSVP<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Paolo Giordano<\/strong> \u2013 Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace \u2013 April 22, 2026 &#8211; 6:00 PM <a href=\"https:\/\/iicnewyork.esteri.it\/en\/gli_eventi\/calendario\/bozza-inkwaves-paolo-giordano-on-infinite-jest-by-david-foster\/\">RSVP<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nicola Lagioia<\/strong> \u2013 Gilead by Marilynne Robinson \u2013 June 24, 2026 &#8211; 6:00 PM <a href=\"https:\/\/iicnewyork.esteri.it\/en\/gli_eventi\/calendario\/inkwaves-nicola-lagioia-on-gilead-by-marilynne-robinson\/\">RSVP<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\u201c[\u2026] with A Farewell to Arms, what happens to me is what happens with the greatest books, and I must think that this, among yours, is the greatest.
