ALBERTO BURRI: HOW MATERIALS MAKE MEANING

Panel Discussion

Over the course of his 50- year career, Alberto Burri developed his artistic path in series, most of which were defined after a dominant material or process: Catrami (tars), Sacchi (sacks), Combustioni (combustions), Legni (woods), Ferri (irons), Cellotex.

The most recent in-depth scientific analysis of Burri’s works was crucial to demonstrate how extensively the artist experimented with these materials.

He was profoundly influenced by the introduction on the market of the new synthetic polymers, which he incorporated, along with traditional pigments and other common industrial products, into his creations.

On the occasion of the Guggenheim’s exhibition “Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting”, the Italian Cultural Institute presents a panel discussion focused on the latest researches conducted by the most important experts in the field, addressing both artistic-historical and condition-related issues that emerge around Burri’s work, providing a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of the artist’s working practice.
