L’Illustrazione in prima pagina

Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo. XVI edizione.

The relationship between graphic design and publishing spans throughout the twentieth century, presenting several artists who have imprinted many editorial series and entire publishing houses with their individual graphic trait. Suffice to mention Ferenc Pinter and John Alcorn.

During the last decade this tradition was revitalized by the breakthrough impressed by Guanda who wanted to standardize their entire graphic content with the work of Guido Scarabottolo, followed by the interesting experiments by Matticchio, Toccafondo, Bologna, Shout, Zagnoli, and many others.

This is a new challenge launched by Italian publishers about illustration and illustrators that has profoundly renewed the editorial image, and the way it is perceived, in Italy.

Stefano Salis who, for 10 years, has maintained a column on the Sunday Supplement of Sole24ORE about books’ covers, will be our guide in this overview.

Salis is an expert in illustration, graphic and design in connection with books and publishing and has organized several exhibitions on the topic. From the contest “Buona la Prima” an award for the best cover of the year (within Art Book Bologna then also at Brussels and Barcelona) to the exhibition “Camilleri at first sight” which dealt with the visual translation of Camilleri’s books, and that was on view in Bologna, Cagliari, Milan, Stockholm, and Malaga.

In conversation with Salis will be Steve Guarnaccia, Professor of Graphic Design at Parsons New School in NYC, who will talk about digitalization and the way it is influencing both the making process and the quality of the book covers.
