In conversation with Harvey Sachs -

Italian conductors in New York series.

Gianandrea Noseda is widely recognized as one of the leading conductors of his generation. He is the International Opera Awards Conductor of the Year 2016 and Musical America’s Conductor of the Year 2015, and was recently appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra beginning with the 2016/17 season. In the 2017/18 season he will become Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., an appointment recognized internationally. In the 2015-16 season, Maestro Noseda conducted Metropolitan Opera's Orchestra and Chorus in Bizet's Les Pecheurs de Perles. In the 2016-17 season he will conduct the sumptuous score of the acclaimed Met Opera’s production Roméo et Juliette, Gounod’s lush Shakespeare adaptation.

Gianandrea Noseda’s appointment as Music Director of the Teatro Regio Torino in 2007 ushered in a transformative era for the company matched with international acclaim for productions, tours, recording, and film projects. His initiatives have propelled the Teatro Regio Torino onto the global stage, where it has become one of Italy’s most important cultural exports. Under his leadership the Teatro Regio Torino has launched its first tours outside of Torino with performances in Austria, China, France, Germany, Japan and Russia. In December 2014 he led the Teatro Regio Torino in a historic first, and critically acclaimed, tour of North America with concert performances of William Tell in Chicago (Harris Theater), Toronto (Roy Thomson Hall), New York (Carnegie Hall) and Ann Arbor, Michigan (University Musical Society). Gianandrea Noseda is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the De Sabata Guest Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Principal Conductor of the Orquestra de Cadaqués and Artistic Director of the Stresa Festival (Italy). He was at the helm of the BBC Philharmonic from 2002 to 2011. In 1997 he was appointed the first foreign Principal Guest Conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre, a position he held for a decade. Gianandrea Noseda has close relationships with many leading orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra that he conducts regularly at the Barbican Centre and on tour, the NHK Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, the Teatro alla Scala and the Wiener Symphoniker. He has a long standing collaboration with The Metropolitan Opera dating back to 2002 and has conducted many new productions, including the 2013 – 2014 season’s widely praised Prince Igor for which he and director Dmitri Tcherniakov fashioned a new version of the opera.

In the 2016-17 season Maestro Noseda conducts Roméo and Juliette at Met Opera.
