IMMAGINARE DOCU-FILM BY WALTER VELTRONI

Screening of the documentary film Immaginare from the series The Eyes Change by Walter Veltroni. (In Italian with English subtitles). Followed by Q&A with the director.

This compilation of archival footage from RAI, Italian national public broadcasting company, features an amazing amount of rare finds, that can shed a light on the relationship between television and culture.

There is Eugenio Montale, who says, slyly: “I do not have a TV set in my apartment”, but must get one because he has just been appointed Consultant for the Television, and smiles amused by the paradox. There is Beniamino Placido who, ironic, launches the challenge of talking about Promessi Sposi on TV “without professors, not against the professors”: unheard-of, heresy.

There is Gabriel Garcia Marquez who explains that his is not “magical realism”, but simply “realism”. There are, also, Alberto Arbasino that interviews Borges, François Truffaut that explains why he wanted to direct Fahrenheit 451, where the totalitarian power burns books, Allen Ginsberg that talks with Fernanda Pivano, there is Marc Chagall, and Carlo Mazzarella, a leviathan in the history of television who interviews Walt Disney explaining the birth of Mickey Mouse by imitating the voice, and Ettore Scola who predicts sarcastic “a solid future as an intellectual”.

Walter Veltroni is an Italian writer, journalist and politician, He was Editor in Chief of the newspaper “L’Unità” , vice Premier, mayor of Rome, Secretary of the democratic party and Premier candidate at the political elections in 2008.
