Edo, Ergo Sum - Photo Exibition

On the occasion of the VI Edition of the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World, the Italian Institute and the Consulate General otf Italy present an exhibition of food-related photos by the well-known photographer and food-stylist Francesco Tonelli. With an impressive list of customers, including some of the most famous food brands, Tonelli is a master of capturing not only the nature of food, but also its elegance and beauty.

Francesco Tonelli is an Italian food photographer and food-stylist based in New York.

Born in the Marche region of Italy and raised in Milan, Francesco Tonelli’s style is rooted in a deep, passionate and lifelong understanding of food.

After finishing culinary school in Milan, Tonelli worked as a chef in restaurants in Italy, Switzerland, and France and became a prominent R&D chef and food stylist for La Cucina Italiana in Milan, developing and styling hundreds of dishes for the magazine before opening his own restaurant in Italy in 1993. Four years later he accepted a position as a faculty member at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in Hyde Park, New York. In 2005 he resigned his faculty position to start a new career as a freelance food photographer.

His popularity increased greatly after his photos started being published on The New York Times. Next, he began a long-lasting collaboration with acclaimed chef Daniel Humm at Humm’s award-winning Eleven Madison Park restaurant (which led to the publishing of several books together). Eventually his work caught the attention of creative agencies and commercial client and he opened his own studio in 2012.

His comfort with food, the cooking process, and the people who create food has endeared him to renowned chefs, creative directors, account executives and food marketing professionals, alike. Whether he is collaborating on cookbooks, traveling to food expos and conferences, judging food photography contests or consulting on recipes for commercial food clients, Francesco’s immersion in the world of food has made him one of the most sought-after food photographers.
