On the occasion of the recent English publication of “Beloved Writing”, a selection of her most important works, some of which had never been translated into English before, Dacia Maraini will talk with Jane Tylus, Professor of Italian at NYU. The title of the talk hints at the idea of writing as a constant feature of human experience, an idea that well characterizes Maraini’s lifelong commitment to literature in its various forms of prose, poetry and drama.
Dacia Maraini is one of the most famous contemporary Italian writers. She is a novelist, a playwright, a poet, a critic, an activist, and a cinematographer. She won, among others, the most prestigious Italian literature awards, which are Campiello and Strega. Her books are translated in twenty-two languages and some of her bestsellers such as Storia di Piera [Piera’s Story], L’età del malessere [The Age of Malaise], La lunga vita di Marianna Ucrìa [The Silent Duchess], Voci [Voices], and Memorie di una ladra [Memories of a Thief] – were turned into successful movies.
Jane Tylus is Professor of Italian Studies and Comparative Literature at New York University, where she is also on the Advisory Board of the Center for the Humanities at NYU. Her recent books include the monograph Siena, City of Secrets (2015), Reclaiming Catherine of Siena: Literature, Literacy, and the Signs of Others (2009), The Poetics of Masculinity in Early Modern Italy and Spain, co-edited with Gerry Milligan (2010), and a translation of the complete poetry of Gaspara Stampa (2010).
