LIVE MUSIC/SOUND INSTALLATION & DANCENORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE
Two Japanese tour de force artists, acclaimed musician Kuniko Kato, praised by Steve Reich as a “first rate percussionist,” and dancer Megumi Nakamura, internationally-known since her days with Jiří Kylián’s Netherlands Dance Theater, explore the mesmerizing scores of legendary 20th-century composer Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001). Project IX – Pleiades, which features one of Xenakis’ most complex and ambitious pieces, Pléiades, is a multimedia work delivered through live performance and a state-of-the-art sound/projection installation. Directed by Italian choreographer Luca Veggetti, one of the featured artists in the 2014 NY PHIL BIENNIAL.
Luca Veggetti (director/choreographer) was born in Bologna, Italy and trained in ballet at La Scala in Milan. After having danced in London and in the U.S., Veggetti began a career as choreographer and stage director in 1990. Turning his interests toward contemporary music and experimental forms, he has developed collaborations with some of today’s most important musical ensembles and composers such as Sylvano Bussotti, Toshio Hosokawa and Kaija Saariaho. His work has been produced and presented by some of the world’s leading theatres, companies and festivals. In 1999, Veggetti became the first Italian choreographer in the 20th century to be invited to work with the Kirov Ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
