Panel Discussion:
The relationships between Italy and the United States during the 20th century are intertwined with art. Artistic exchanges between the two countries relationship play a key role in shaping their mutual trends of taste, cultural history and political concerns.The Italian Cultural Institute will gather scholars and experts in the fields of conservation, promotion and scholarly research of Modern and Contemporary Art to talk about some pivotal case studies in this exchange: the market of Old Masters between late 19th and early 20th century, developed by the major scholars and dealers to provide the American magnates with a new social status and awareness through art; the exchanges and early travels of artists between the two shores of Atlantic Ocean around WWII, comparing the respective cultural backgrounds and mutually updating thanks to the vision of collectors and museum directors who foresee the activity of those dealers and collectors that will establish a huge international network of Pop, Minimal, Conceptual, Arte Povera and new figurative artists between the 1960s and 1980s; finally, the most recent episodes will be faced, especially the pivotal role of art market in supporting the leading artists today as well as in discovering and promoting new and unedited artistic contexts within the international system where national identities dialogue and compare one each other.
The panel will discuss all these issues, highlighting the role of art as ambassador of both American and Italian cultures, field of meeting and unexhausted sharing, and crucial promoter of cultural and civil improvement.
