Julia Della Putta, from Udine, Italy, as a child began to gaze at the sky fantasizing about the destinations of the airplanes passing over her and imagining herself, one day, at the helm of an airplane flying to some distant country. She obtained her first flight license at the age of seventeen and would have liked to continue her studies as a pilot in the Air Force to be able to fly fast and powerful aircraft such as those of the Frecce Tricolori, which she saw practicing in the skies near her home, despite the fact that in the 1980s in Italy there were no female pilots, not even in commercial airlines. In 1988 she was among the first women to be admitted to the flight school of the Italian national airline, which was beginning to adapt to the rest of the world, and with which she flew for thirty years. Julia has been flying as Captain since 2000 – abroad after the closure of the national airline in 2021 – and is preparing to celebrate 40 years of flying activity in 2024. Her book recounts her flying and life experiences in Tanzania.

Marina Della Putta Johnston is an Italian Studies scholar whose research spans from migration issues to the history of art, technology, and science, to the cultural, socioeconomic, and political value of food. She worked as an educator and administrator at several colleges and universities in the greater Philadelphia area for over 30 years and has been a member of several American and international scholarly association boards. She has extensive experience shaping and directing academic programs and intercultural exchanges, large conferences, and travel programs, locally and internationally.
