Many individuals or peoples may happen to believe that “every stranger is an enemy”. This conviction lies
deep in the soul like a latent infection; it manifests itself only in occasional and uncoordinated acts, and is
not at the origin of a system of thought. But when it happens that, as an unexpressed dogma, it becomes
the premise of a syllogism, then, at the end of the chain, stands the concentration camp, the product of a
conception of the world pushed to its extreme consequences with rigorous consistency: as long as the
conception exists, its consequences threaten humanity.

Primo Levi, 1947
