Screening of the Docufilm Operation Bathyscaphe Trieste
On January 23, 1960, the bathyscaphe, designed by Auguste Piccard and piloted by Jacques Piccard along with U.S. Navy Lieutenant Don Walsh, reached a depth of 10,916 meters in the Mariana Trench, setting a world record. A journey into the depths of history and human ingenuity. The docufilm Operation Bathyscaphe Trieste, directed by Massimiliano Finazzer Flory, tells the story of one of the most extraordinary feats of 20th-century marine exploration, a symbol of courage, innovation, and international collaboration.
The film combines archival materials from the Istituto Luce, personal testimonies, and poetic storytelling, featuring Bertrand Piccard and Kelly Walsh, and also follows the reconstruction of the bathyscaphe, now preserved in both Italy and the United States.
More than a scientific record, it is the story of a visionary dream: exploring the unknown and turning knowledge into courage, curiosity, and peace.
After the screening, the director will hold a conversation with Claudio Pagliara, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute of New York, to discuss the historical and cultural significance of the Bathyscaphe Trieste expedition.
