A Chimbanta – traditional Sardinian polyphony

The Italian Cultural Institute of New York is pleased to present Tenores di Neoneli, the renowned Sardinian vocal ensemble founded in 1976 and led by Tonino Cau, with the participation of musicians Orlando Mascia and Matteo Muscas.

The performance, titled “Omines Ammentos – Anthology,” offers a journey into the tradition of canto a tenore, recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This ancient form of a cappella polyphonic singing, performed by four voices, is one of the most powerful and distinctive expressions of Sardinian culture.

Through archaic rhythms, guttural sounds, and musical textures that evoke nature, canto a tenore becomes a collective ritual, a shared memory, and a profound expression of community identity.

Tenores di Neoneli’s repertoire combines tradition and innovation, opening the ancient vocal practice to dialogue with instruments and soundscapes such as launeddas, accordion, jaw harp, and traditional flutes.
