Dining on the Deep Blue Sea – Food, Sailors, and Mediterranean Labor
This lecture, led by Archeologist Andrew Donnelly, investigates two shipwrecks: the 6th century CE Marzamemi 2, sometimes known as the “Church Wreck,” which sank off the coast of southeast Sicily, and the 7th century CE Yassıada, located off the Bodrum peninsula in southwest Turkey. Here he examines the ceramic assemblages of each ship, focusing in this case on dining and cooking materials.Learn what these small, humble sherds of pottery can tell us about the lived lives of those who have walked more softly through history, the crews of the ships.
