1946: The Birth of the Republic. The Constituent Assembly at Montecitorio  marks the 80th anniversary of the institutional referendum in which Italians chose between monarchy and republic, and of the election of the Constituent Assembly.

Modeled on the major exhibition organized by the Italian Chamber of Deputies at Palazzo Montecitorio in Rome, the exhibition at the Italian Cultural Institute of New York features reproductions of documents from the Chamber’s Historical Archive, period photographs, and multimedia materials. It traces the key developments from the end of the Second World War to the vote of June 2, 1946, and the subsequent approval of the Constitution of the Italian Republic on December 22, 1947.
