Between Turin and New York: the upcoming Ancient Cyprus Exhibition of Musei Reali di Torino and the Cesnola Collection at the Met.
A multimedia presentation to illustrate the collaboration between the Musei Reali in Turin and the Metropolitan Museum on the production of the exhibition “Cipro. Crocevia delle civiltà” which opens on April 2 in Turin, Italy and which includes several artworks from the Cesnola Collection of antiquities from Cyprus, one of the earliest acquisitions by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In 1872—two years after its founding—275 crates of objects were purchased and brought to the MET by Luigi Palma di Cesnola, who soon became its first director. This collection, with over 6,000 works, documents the art of Cyprus from ca. 3000 BCE through ca. CE 300 in all major media—terracottas, bronzes, gems, glass, silver and gold plate, and jewelry.
Curated by Luca Bombardieri and Elisa Panero, as a joint project by the Musei Reali and Turin University, the exhibition was developed around Italy’s most important collection of Ancient Cypriot art, and brings for the first time to Italy important pieces from major partner institutions, as the Cyprus Museum of Nicosia, the British Museum of London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York.
With the participation of Elisa Panero, Curator of Archaelology at Musei Reali Torino, and Joan Mertens, Curator of Greek and Roman Art at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
