Can Italy
avoid seven more years of lean cows? Yes, but only if we restart thinking
long-term.

Today’s strategic decisions will determine what Italy will be
in 2020. Italy should restore hope in the young generations and rediscover some
of its traditional strengths: stimulate social mobility by promoting
meritocracy starting from schools; revitalize the local dimension of development
by leveraging on Italy’s unique cities, territorial excellences, industrial
district and know-how clusters; unleash the entrepreneurial spirit and renowned
creativity of its people; promote innovation in new sectors, as well as
traditional ones, focusing primarily on “low-cost” innovation; leverage on the
potential of its unparalleled cultural heritage – the Italian “shale gas” – to
create economic growth; learn how to take advantage (also economically) of its
new intercultural and diverse society. “Sette anni di vacche sobrie” studies the challenges and opportunities of growth Italy is facing
in the medium-long term.

The hope is that for the next seven years the cows, if not
fat, could at least be sober.
