THE BOOK OF THE MONTH: The Other America, by Cometto and Maggi

Cometto_Maggi

Two Italian journalists, husband and wife, who have lived in New York since 2000, recount America through two coast-to-coast journeys undertaken as “special correspondents” for the Italian Cultural Institute of New York.

The first trip retraced the pioneers’ routes—from New York to Oregon and back through the northern states—while the second journeyed from New York to San Diego, crossing the South. Altogether, they covered 20,000 miles in 105 days.
Their central theme is the discovery of “The Other America,” far from the familiar tourist landmarks yet close to the nation’s authentic spirit.

Along the way, they uncovered unexpected gems such as the Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas, and, more importantly, countless human stories: among them, that of Opal Lee, the 96-year-old African American “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” who practices colorblind love in Fort Worth, Texas. They also discovered countless traces of Italy across America: from NASA scientists of Italian origin at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena to chef Bruno Serato of Anaheim, who cooks and serves free pasta meals to children in need around his White House restaurant.
