Sissy Castrogiovanni Concert | Week of the Italian Language

Sissi Concerto

Sissy Castrogiovanni
“Fra due mondi”

Concert

As part of the Week of the Italian Language in the World
dedicated this year to the theme “Italofonia”

A musical journey between roots and revolution: the voice of Sissy Castrogiovanni tells the volcanic soul of Sicily and the pulsating energy of America. Two worlds that do not exclude but embrace, contaminate, and complete each other, giving life to a unique musical language called Sicilian-Jazz. Each piece is a fragment of this journey, a musical confession intertwining ancestral emotions and contemporary sounds. Compositions where a jazz heart, with its harmonic and improvisational elements, coexists with Mediterranean roots, emerging through rhythmic and vocal choices. Through the use of the Sicilian language intertwined with Afro-American jazz, the artist breathes new life into an ancient cultural heritage, transforming it into a modern and universal expression. The intrinsic musicality of Sicilian—with its harsh yet lyrical sounds—melds with jazz harmonies and improvisations, creating a unique aesthetic: visceral, poetic, and deeply rooted in identity.

Sissy Castrogiovanni, one of the most unique and creative artists on the contemporary jazz scene, is a Sicilian jazz award-winning singer, composer, producer, and Berklee College of Music professor. With notable performances at world-renowned venues such as The European Parliament and the Boston Symphony Hall, Sissy Castrogiovanni has extensively toured Europe, the United States, and South America since a very young age. She has collaborated with numerous distinguished artists, including legendary multi-Grammy-winning singer Bobby McFerrin and Latin-Grammy-winning producer Javier Limon. Musically rooted in her island, Sicily, her arrangements and compositions are an attractive synthesis of musical cultures. A pleasurable intricacy of her Sicilian and Mediterranean influences, earthy African rhythms, and post-bop jazz harmonies, Sissy’s music finds its niche in this vast sea of jazz and world music.

With her expressive and emotional voice, praised for its rare vocal range, control, and versatility by influential publications such as Jazziz Magazine, WNPR, and DownBeat Magazine, Castrogiovanni’s soulful and powerful sound allows us to discover a new universe, where extremely rich melodies become soundscapes that transport us immediately into a world full of life and art. Her latest work, “TERRA,” produced under Manū Records, reached the ballot round for the GRAMMY® Awards nominations in four categories: “Best Vocal Jazz Album,” “Best Arrangement,” “Best Improvised Jazz Solo,” and “Best Engineered Album.”
