Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th June, ANICA and AIE will present their event “Words on Screen. New Italian Literature into Film” in New York, with the goal of promoting Italian film production and publishing industries as part of the Italian Government project “2013 Year of Italian Culture in the United States”. The programme of events, made possible by the support of the Ministry for Economic Development and organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Cinema per Roma through New Cinema Network, will feature screenings for the public of films inspired by Italian novels, debates with directors, producers, writers and editors, meetings on film projects inspired by the literary production of Italian authors.
The goal of the project, the first of its kind, is to reinforce the presence of the Italian film and book publishing industries on the American market and to foster international coproduction collaborations, highlighting the correlation that exists between Italian books and films: in recent years 20% of the films released in Italian theatres have been adapted from books.
The initiatives of “Words on Screen. New Italian Literature into Film” will be held on June 3rd and 4th at the Casa Italiana Zerilli-Marimò, the seat of the Department of Italian Studies at New York University.
On June 3rd, at 4:30 pm there will be a meeting on the film Bellas Mariposas, inspired by the novel of the same name by Sergio Atzeni published by Sellerio, for which the guests will be director and producer Salvatore Mereu and Cecilia Valmarana for Rai Cinema.
A second debate, scheduled for 8 pm, will feature the producer Mario Gianani and Kylee Doust, the literary agent and translator of the novel Io e te by Niccolò Ammaniti, published by Einaudi Stile Libero (published in English with the title Me and You by Black Cat, Tra edition), from which Bernardo Bertolucci adapted his film Io e te, which will be screened before the meeting (at 6:15 pm).
The journalist and writer Antonio Monda will moderate both the encounters.
The next day, Tuesday June 4th, at 4:30 pm Antonio Monda will interview Simone Lenzi, author of the book La generazione, published by Baldini Castoldi Dalai, from which Paolo Virzì adapted the film Tutti i santi giorni, together with Cecilia Valmarana for the film that Rai Cinema has produced with Virzì’s own production company Motorino Amaranto.
Starting at 6:15 pm there will be a screening of Siberian Education by Gabriele Salvatores, which will be followed by a meeting (at 8:15 pm) with Nicolai Lilin, author of the novel Educazione Siberiana published by Giulio Einaudi editore, and with Gina Gardini for the Cattleya production company.
On the same two days, a number of meetings will be organized between Italian and American producers regarding five projects for films adapted from Italian literary works: “La cospirazione delle colombe” by Vincenzo Latronico (Bompiani) which inspired the film that will be directed by Marina Spada and produced by Francesco Pamphili for Film Kairòs; “Il sopravvissuto”, a novel by Antonio Scurati (Bompiani), for which Rai Cinema holds the film rights; “Storia controversa dell’inarrestabile fortuna del vino Aglianico nel mondo” by Gaetano Cappelli (Marsilio) which will be produced by Andrea Stucovitz of Partner Media Investment; “5 è il numero perfetto”, a graphic novel by Igort (Rizzoli – Coconino Press), which will adapted for the screen by Cattleya.
The relationship between film and literature in Italy is deeply rooted and boasts prestigious testimonials: in an ideal twinning with regards to the contents of the project, on June 2nd Edison, as part of the celebrations for its 130th anniversary and within the framework of the Year of Culture, will offer a foretaste of the theme by presenting three short films by Ermanno Olmi drawn from historic works of Italian literature: L’onda by Gabriele D’Annunzio, with Giorgio Albertazzi, Dialogo tra un venditore di almanacchi e un passeggere, by Giacomo Leopardi and Manon Finestra 2, by Pierpaolo Pasolini. The presentation of these three documentaries will be the occasion for highlighting the unique history that binds Edison and Ermanno Olmi, a relationship so intense that, in 2011, they collaborated in the production of his latest film “The Cardboard Village” (Il villaggio di cartone).
The partners in the programme include yet another icon of Italian culture, Birra Moretti, which will offer tastings to the guests and the audience during the breaks. With its 150-year history, available in New York for over 30 years, Birra Moretti represents one of the icons of reference at the international level for quality and taste Made in Italy.

2.30 pm: Stefano Albertini, director of Casa Italiana, moderates an encounter with Francesca Magliulo, director of Corporate Responsibility for Edison and with Sergio Tofetti, director of the Archivio Nazionale del Cinema d’impresa and of the Piedmont offices of the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. Edison will screen three short films by Ermanno Olmi for the public:
