Courses for foreigners in Italy

Courses on Italian language and culture offered by Italian universities

Courses on Italian language, culture and other topics offered to foreigners

Below is a list of schools and academies that offer courses targeted to foreign students. Courses can be searched by region and/or city and/or category. The menu options for selecting categories are deliberately wide, e.g. “Italian Language”, “Design”, “Music” or “Singing”; you will be redirected to the schools’ own websites, where all sub-categories are listed.

Looking for courses of Italian? By visiting the websites of the schools listed here, you will be able to distinguish between those entirely devoted to teaching Italian and those offering Italian courses to complement other topics, such as art, fashion or interior design, cooking, etc.

The schools of Italian language and culture recipient of the “Presa d’atto” (Acknowledgment) from MIUR (Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research) were issued a positive report following an inspection by Ministry officers, and are therefore in a position to assure a higher degree of reliability in their organization and higher quality standards in their teaching.

When visiting the websites of the various schools, prospective students should check to see if the schools belong to an association that oversees the quality of the services provided and accredits these schools in relation to their patrons.

These associations include, at the national level:

and at the international level:

  • FIYTO (Federation of International Youth Travel Organisations)
  • ALTO (Association of Language Travel Organisations)
  • IALC (International Association of Language Centres)
  • TANDEM (International Network of Quality Language Institutes)
  • EAQUALS (The European Association for Quality Language Services)
  • IHWO (International House World Organisation)

It is also important to find out if the schools are recognized as institutes of formal training and are certified to issue certificates attesting to a knowledge and command of the Italian language.

For all those schools which fail to meet these requirements, it is highly recommended that their website be thoroughly examined to see if it contains clear and precise information regarding:

  • the financial arrangements for enrollment in courses (costs, deposits, return of deposits in case of cancellation);
  • the location of the classes (buildings, classrooms, infrastructure, technical facilities);
  • type of housing made available to students (cost and location);
  • teaching staff (credentials and experience);
  • teaching materials used.
