Speranza Scappucci in conversation with Harvey Sachs

Italian born conductor Speranza Scappucci recently made a successful Vienna debut acclaimed by the public and critics alike with La Traviata and La Cenerentola at the Vienna State Opera. In February 2017, she was the first female conductor to direct the orchestra in the annual Vienna Opera Ball. She is considered one of the most interesting conductors of her generation on the international scene.

Speranza Scappucci (born in Rome) graduated in piano from the Conservatorio di Musica Santa Cecilia and continued her music studies in New York at Juilliard, where she earned a certificate in piano and a M.M. in performance. She worked as a répétiteur and rehearsal pianist for the NewYork City Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Santa Fe Opera, the Music Academy of the West, Glyndebourne Festival Opera , the Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna State Opera as well as for the Salzburg Festival, in a collaboration spanning eight years with Artistic Director Riccardo Muti. In 2012 Scappucci made her opera conducting debut with the Yale Opera in Così fan tutte. Since then she has conducted with the Scottish Opera, the Juilliard Opera, the Santa Fe Opera as well as the Vienna State Opera. In February 2017, she was the first female conductor to direct the orchestra in the annual Vienna Opera Ball. In March 2017, Scappucci made her first appearance with the Opéra Royal de Wallonie. Based on her work in this production, in April 2017 the Opéra Royal de Wallonie named her its new principal conductor, the first female conductor to hold this post, effective with the present season.

Harvey Sachs, writer and music historian, has published nine books, of which there are now nearly seventy editions in seventeen languages.
