Fake Marble at the Institute: the Secrets of Scagliola

Fake Marble at the Institute: the Secrets of Scagliola

Fake Marble at the Institute: The Secrets of Scagliola is a show featuring two contemporary artists revitalizing the secretive Italian art form of scagliola.

It was traditionally used during the renaissance to replicate marble, but the un-intuitive process, more similar to baking than painting, was so closely guarded by the most advanced plasterer’s it nearly went extinct in the 1900’s as industrialization made marble cheaper than labor it took to fake it.

Now it is being revived and repurposed by the artists of this show: Matthew Bergey and Melissa Vogley Woods, who are pushing the material to new limits beyond the mimicking of marble.

There will be also be two books on display by David Hayes.

There will be ONE workshop offered on October 2 and 3 between the hours of 10AM-3,30PM.

The workshop is spread over two days.

Materials will be provided by the Italian Cultural Institute
