The Bridge Book Award - Conceived and curated by Maria Ida Gaeta, founder of the House of Literature and the Festival of International “Letterature” in Rome, and organized with the collaboration of Maria Gliozzi, former founder of the American non-profit organization American Initiative for Italian Culture (AIFIC).

The Italian Cultural Institute in New York, the Italian Writers Federation (Federazione Unitaria Italiana Scrittori, FUIS) and the American Academy in Rome, are currently the main partners of the Award. Since its first edition, the prize has also benefited from the support of numerous other Italian and American institutions, such as the American Embassy of the United States in Rome, the Centro per il Libro e Lettura of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage in Italy (CEPELL), the Center for Italian Modern Art (CIMA) in New York, the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington DC, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, the Consulate General of Italy in New York, and the Center For Fiction in New York, which has taken the position of managing institution in 2019-2021. In addition, other Italian and American cultural organizations and universities have collaborated in different ways.

The Prize covers the costs of translation of the four winning books from Italian into English and the other way around. In this way the project intends to promote knowledge and visibility of the best and most recent publications in fiction and non-fiction that are often not included in the flows of the publishing market of the two countries. The Award is also aimed at promoting the dissemination of the Italian language, and stimulating its circulation in the American publishing and university circuit.

From 2015 to 2021, with the exclusion of 2020 suspended due to the pandemic crisis, 60 Italian authors and 60 American authors, divided between fiction and non-fiction, participated in the competition. Up to the present, with the exception of the 2021 edition still in progress, 10 winning books of Italian fiction and non-fiction and 10 American fiction and non-fiction texts have been translated.
