The Great American Triumphs | 1955-1970

 Exhibition

Opening June 17, 2022 at 6PM

On view from June 20 to July 13, 2022

On the occasion of the celebrations for the 100th year anniversary of the birth of Renata Tebaldi, the Italian Cultural Institute, in collaboration with the Renata Tebaldi Museum and the Renata Tebaldi Foundation Museum, hosts the exhibition: Renata Tebaldi Miss Sold Out, the US celebration of an Opera Deity.

On display, wonderful portraits, magnificent large-scale photos and unpublished videos describing Tebaldi's American triumphs from 1955 to 1974, a testimony of her becoming one of the most striking artistic expressions in the history of Opera in the World.

On January 31, 1955, Renata Tebaldi debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, triumphing as Desdemona in the Otello with Mario Del Monaco. She then performed at the Metropolitan, which became her main venue, regularly and for many years in numerous Opera's productions, and was also on tour, throughout  the US. Renata Tebaldi became the absolute star of Opera.

After a standing ovation from the public that lasted almost ten minutes, the Tosca's "Vissi d’arte" was repeated in San Francisco on October 19, 1955. On September 16, 1956 she sung in a concert at the San Francisco's Golden Gate Park in front of 40,000 people. In America they no longer called her Renata Tebaldi but "Miss sold out".

In 1958, as evidence of her global fame, she was featured on the cover of Time. On August 2, 1960, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and on March 6, 1961, at the Capitol Great Hall in Washington, Tebaldi sung in front of J. F. Kennedy for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.

Renata Tebaldi after her US experience became an icon of Italy, and from being universally recognized as one of the symbolic voices of world music of all times, she acquired the status of an emblematic expression of art.

The celebratory exhibition dedicated to Renata Tebaldi is the recognition of Opera as an extraordinary promotion of Italian culture in the world.
