Presentation of the new English translation of The Betrothed by Michael Moore. The new English publication of the novel invites us to reread Manzoni’s masterpiece with new eyes. Michael F. Moore, in conversation with journalist Gianni Riotta, will talk about how his version tries to restore the novel’s “popular” dimension and introduce it to a new generation of readers.

Pulitzer-Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri hails the publication of this translation is “A landmark literary occasion.”

 

Michael F. Moore is a translator/interpreter from the Italian. He received his Ph.D in Italian from New York University. His published translations range from twentieth-century classics – Agostino by Alberto Moravia and The Drowned and the Saved by Primo Levi – to contemporary novels, most recently Live Bait by Fabio Genovesi and Lost Words by Nicola Gardini. He was the chair of the Advisory Board for the PEN-Heim Translation Fund.

Gianni Riotta is a novelist and journalist. He has had two novels translated into English: Prince of the Clouds and The Lights of Alborada. A regular contributor for the daily newspaper La Stampa and a former editor-in-chief of the financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, Rai 3 and the news bulletin TG1. He has contributed to the Washington Post, Le Monde, Foreign Policy, and the New York Times.

22nd Week of the Italian Language in the World: “L’italiano e i giovani. Come scusa? Non ti followo” /

“Italian and Youth. Excuse me? I don’t follow you”

This event is part of the Week of the Italian Language in the World, an initiative that has been held since 2001. Organized by the diplomatic-consular network and the Italian Cultural Institutes together with MIC, MUR and the main partners of language promotion in Italy (Accademia della Crusca, Dante Alighieri Society) and the Government of the Helvetic Confederation, the Week has become over time one of the most important initiatives dedicated to the celebration of the Italian language internationally. Since its establishment, the initiative has been awarded each year High Patronage by the Presidency of the Republic.

Each Week is dedicated to a different theme, which serves as a common thread for a rich program of conferences, exhibitions and meetings. The theme of the 2022 edition, which takes place Oct. 17-23, is “L’italiano e i giovani. Come scusa? Non ti followo” / “Italian and Youth. Excuse me? I don’t follow you”
