The Italian Cultural Institute in New York and the International Association for Art and Psychology (I.A.A.Ps.), founded by the psychoanalyst-psychiatrist and art historian Dr. Graziella Magherini, are pleased to present the panel: Mirrorings Forms of desire and portrait of identity on the occasion of the opening of Stories I wrote about You a photo exhibitionby by artist Roberto Baroncini.
Among the speakers I.A.A.Ps honorary member Dr. Harold Blum, the President of the Association, Dr. Roberto Boccalon, Drs. Jean-Michel Rabaté, Lois Oppenheim, and Luca Caldironi.
The initiative furthers the goals inherent within the Association since its inception: internationality and the exploration of the relationships that exist between the visual arts, literature, music and the psychological arena understood in its broadest sense as a creative phenomenon. The event will also serve to reestablish the ancient ties that existed at its founding, ties with the United States and New York in particular.
Following the discussion, a musical performance offered by Silvia Cesco on classical guitar, and the screening of a short video by Roberto Baroncini, based on the theme of his iconic work.

Harold Blum, MD, is Training and Supervising Analyst at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education affiliated with New York University, School of Medicine. Dr. Blum is Distinguished Fellow, American Psychiatric Association; Executive Director Emeritus, Sigmund Freud Archives; President, Psychoanalytic Research and Development Fund; Past Editor-in-Chief, Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association; and Past Vice President, International Psychoanalytical Association.
Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, New York University School of Medicine (ret)., Dr. Blum is the author of more than one hundred eighty psychoanalytic papers and several books. He is the recipient of numerous awards and lectureships including the inaugural Sigourney Award; the Mahler, Hartmann, and Lorand Prizes; S. Freud lectures in New York, London, Vienna, and Frankfurt; the A. Freud, Hartmann, Brill, Friend, and Sperling Lectures; two plenary addresses to the American Psychoanalytic Association; and thec Robert Waelder Memorial Lecture, Philadelphia. In addition, Dr. Blum was the Chair of Five Symposia on Psychoanalysis and Art in Florence, Italy.
Roberto Boccalon, M.D. received his degree in medicine and surgery as well as his professional training in psychiatry from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome. He went on to teach psychiatry at the University of Ferrara (1989-2009) and has been teaching psychology since 2011 at the University of Venice. Dr. Boccalon has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the 3rd (Ferrara 1994) and 11th (Lucca 2011) Conferences of the European Committee for Arts Therapies Education (ECArTE) and a member of the Scientific Committee of the conference entitled “Myth and Consciousness: Art and Psychoanalysis” at the Italian Institute of Culture in New York (2001). Since 2018, he has been President of the International Association for Art and Psychology.
Jean-Michel Rabaté, PhD, is Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania, co-editor of the Journal of Modern Literature, co-founder and senior curator of Slought Foundation, and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the author or editor of fifty books on modernism, psychoanalysis, philosophy and literary theory. Monographs include Rust (2018), Kafka L.O.L. (2018), Rire au Soleil (2019), Beckett and Sade (2020), Rires Prodigues: Rire et jouissance chez Marx, Freud et Kafka ( 2021), James Joyce, Hérétique et Prodigue (2022) and Lacan l’irritant (2023). He has edited After Derrida (2018), New Beckett (2019), Understanding Derrida / Understanding Modernism (2019), Knots: Post-Lacanian Readings of literature and film (2020) and co-edited Historical Modernisms: Time, History and Modernist Aesthetics (2022) and Encounters with Soun-Gui Kim: Writings, 1975-2021 (2022).
Lois Oppenheim, Ph.D. is University Distinguished Scholar, Professor of French, and Chair of the Department of World Languages and Cultures at Montclair State University where she teaches courses in literature and medical humanities. She is Scholar Associate Member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, where she is also on the Faculty. Dr. Oppenheim has authored or edited fifteen books, the most recent being For Want of Ambiguity: Order and Chaos in Art, Psychoanalysis, and Neuroscience (co-authored; Bloomsbury) and Imagination from Fantasy to Delusion (Routledge), awarded the Courage to Dream Prize from the American Psychoanalytic Association. Other titles include A Curious Intimacy: Art and Neuro-Psychoanalysis and The Painted Word: Samuel Beckett’s Dialogue With Art. She has also published more than 90 papers and book chapters, been a Visiting Scholar at NYS Psychiatric Institute, and is co-creator of two documentary films, one on mental health stigma and the other on psychosis.
Luca Caldironi is an Italian licensed MD and clinical Psychiatrist, he is a member of the Italian Society of Psychoanalysis (SPI), and also holds memberships in the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA), in the Board of the Confederation of Independent Psychoanalytic Societies (CIPS) and in the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA). He is a Professor and Training Analyst at the Martha Harris School of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (Tavistock Model) in Bologna, Italy. His numerous publications and presentations reflect an emphasis on Bionian thought, especially around the concept of “creativity”, which he also incorporates as Founder of the Venetian art exhibition spaces Castello925 (www.castello925.com). He has a private practice in both Modena and Venice.
Over time he increasingly felt the need to use his knowledge, gained through his clinical work, in other fields, such as the artistic and the creative one in its broadest sense. From this need and reason was born the idea of “K-Now-L-Edge”, devoted to the study of creativity and its developments for people who want to deepen their understanding and enhance their personal skills and professional opportunities. He is now start working abroad as “Individual and Groups Professional Consultant in the Emotional Development” using a psychodynamic approach. He is in the board of The International Association for Art and Psychology (IAAPs), founded in June 2000 by the psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Graziella Magherini from Florence, which aims to deepen the theme of the relationship between psychology and the ‘arts’, between production and aesthetic enjoyment, encouraging an interdisciplinary comparison among mental health professionals and artists, historians and art critics.
