That day … 25 years later

7/11, the day that  changed the world, 25 years after.

Screening of an excerpt from Quel giorno (That Day), a documentary by Claudio Pagliara originally broadcast on Speciale TG1 on September 5, 2021, to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Moderated by Claudio Pagliara, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute of New York.

WHY:

One hundred million Americans were born after September 11, 2001, and have no direct memory of the deadliest terrorist attack in history.

The evening, a tribute to the nearly 3,000 victims, begins with the testimony of a survivor, recorded by Claudio Pagliara on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of 9/11. His story will provide the starting point for a broader reflection on what that day meant for New York, the United States, and the world, through a conversation with journalists Maria Teresa Cometto and Glauco Maggi, who were both in New York on September 11, 2001, and reported on the events for Corriere della Sera.

To mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Cometto and Maggi have published Da Giuliani a Mamdani. New York 25 anni dopo l’11 settembre. Their vision of New York’s future is captured in the words of New York designer Michael Kors, who created the first dress worn by First Lady Michelle Obama: “New York can be the toughest, grittiest place in the world, but also the most glamorous and magical. This yin and yang has always guided me… When the city falls, it gets back up. It reacts. It constantly transforms itself.”

During their 26 years as New Yorkers, the authors have experienced that same “yin and yang.” In their book, they explore the resilience of a city that has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to recover and reinvent itself: today, less Wall Street and more Tech City; safer and enriched by new museums and cultural institutions, but also more expensive and increasingly marked by political divisions. Yet New York remains illuminated by the thousand lights of an irrepressible spirit of renewal.

BIO

Maria Teresa Cometto and Glauco Maggi are Italian journalists and authors, wife and husband. They have lived in New York since 2000 and have been U.S. citizens since 2018. They are co-authors of “From Giuliani to Mamdani. New York. “From Giuliani to Mamdani. New York 25 Years After September 11” (2026 Mind Edizioni) and “This Is Not New York. Journey into Deep America” (2024 Neri Pozza, 2026 Bordighera Press). She writes for Corriere della Sera and has published, among others, the books “Emma and the Angel of Central Park” (2022 Neri Pozza, 2023 Bordighera Press), “Marchesa Colombi.
