CONCERT I American Tapes with Giulia Mazzoni (piano)

IMG_5961

American Tapes is a solo-piano concert conceived as a musical travel diary: a journey through cities, encounters, works of art, cinema, literature and memories that have shaped the artistic and human path of Italian composer and pianist Giulia Mazzoni.

New York is the ideal point of departure. Ellis Island, one of the most evocative pieces from Mazzoni’s album Room 2401 (Sony Music). The title of the album was inspired by room 2401 in a Chicago hotel and features celebrated British composer Michael Nyman in a special two-piano version of The Departure.

This American dialogue continued with YAS – Your Anima System (ADA/Warner), recorded between Los Angeles, Prague and Florence and produced with Thom Russo, with an international creative team including American conductor John Axelrod, Canadian musician and drummer Randy Cooke, and American mastering engineer Gavin Lurssen. The project expanded Mazzoni’s musical language into an electro-symphonic and cinematic dimension, placing the piano at the center of a dialogue with orchestra, rhythm, and electronic textures.

In American Tapes, these experiences become part of a wider musical journey, bringing Mazzoni’s original compositions into dialogue with Michael Nyman, Philip Glass and Giacomo Puccini. In the centenary year of the world premiere of Turandot (1926–2026), she presents a special solo-piano reimagining of Nessun dorma, elaborated and expanded with original material, creating a dialogue between Puccini’s legacy and a contemporary compositional voice.

Selected visual interventions accompany specific moments of the performance, while the piano remains the narrative and emotional heart of the concert. American Tapes is the musical diary of an Italian composer in the world — and in New York, for the first time, the tape begins to play.
