SYNOPSIS
Winner of the 2026 David di Donatello Awards for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, Francesco Sossai’s Le città di pianura (The last One of the Road) is a poignant and quietly humorous road movie set in Italy’s Veneto region.
Two middle-aged friends, united by their ritual search for “one last drink,” set off on a nocturnal journey that leads them to an unexpected encounter with a young architecture student. As they travel through small towns and forgotten landscapes, the film unfolds into a touching reflection on friendship, aging, missed opportunities, and the enduring desire to find meaning in ordinary lives. With its blend of wit, melancholy, and lyrical storytelling, Cities of the Plain confirms Sossai as one of the most original voices in contemporary Italian cinema.
THE CONCEPT
Hidden Gems of Italy is a film festival featuring three films set in some of Italy’s lesser-known landscapes, with the aim of encouraging a more conscious way of discovering these places—one that combines appreciation with preservation. Alongside Le città di pianura (The Last One of the Road) the festival features La vita va così ( Septembre 23) and Le otto montagn (The Eight Mountains – September 29).
