ITALY WALK: Italian Art in Central Park

Third event of the ITALY WALK series: a walking tour in New York led by Maria Teresa Cometto and Glauco Maggi, discovering statues and monuments inspired by Italy or created by Italian artists.

Itinerary:
Starting from the Italian Cultural Institute, we will enter Central Park and walk along The Mall to reach Bethesda Fountain, featuring the Angel of the Waters, sculpted in Rome by New York artist Emma Stebbins. The fountain will be closed starting in June for approximately two years, and a Central Park Conservancy expert will explain the restoration work.

The tour will then pay tribute to the statue of Giuseppe Mazzini, hero of the Risorgimento, created by Italian sculptor Giovanni Turini. At Columbus Circle, we will explore the monument to Christopher Columbus by Italian sculptor Gaetano Russo.

Next, we visit the USS Maine National Monument at the Merchants’ Gate entrance to the park, sculpted in the Bronx by Italian artist Attilio Piccirilli. Finally, we will walk through the park to the Sheep Meadow and exit onto Fifth Avenue at 67th Street.

Maria Teresa Cometto and Glauco Maggi are Italian journalists and authors, husband and wife living in New York since 2000 and US citizens since 2018. Among other works, they are co-authors of “Qui non è Nuova York” (Neri Pozza), now also in English published by Bordighera Press: “(RE)COVERING AMERICA. Two Italians, One Epic Road Trip, from New York to the Pacific. 105 Days, Breaking Stereotypes.”
