Synopsis

Naples, 1983. Due to structural damage caused by bradyseism, the women’s prison in Pozzuoli is closed, and the inmates are temporarily relocated to other penal facilities in the region. Some of them are housed for a time at the Nisida juvenile detention center—which, at the time, held only boys.

During this same period, Eduardo De Filippo—having been appointed a Senator for Life—surprises his colleagues in the Senate (Palazzo Madama) by dedicating his maiden speech entirely to the young people incarcerated at the Nisida and Filangieri juvenile detention centers. He visits Nisida several times and contributes to the renovation of the prison’s theater, personally sketching out its new design. He establishes a school for stagecraft and acting within the facility, and sends actors from his own theater company to stage what would become the first-ever theatrical production in an Italian juvenile penal institution.

Inspired by these true events—and by the encounter between a young male inmate from Nisida and a female inmate from the Pozzuoli prison, who share the experience of theater for the first time—this film weaves together reality and fiction, real-life figures and invented characters. It creates a sweeping tapestry of emotions and passions, set within the juvenile prison of a Naples from forty years ago—a city that feels distant and different, yet, at its core, remains remarkably similar to the Naples of today.
