Opening night
– 1946: The Birth of the Republic
– Caravaggio: Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy
With Hon. Giorgio Mulè, Vice President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies
The Italian Cultural Institute of New York is pleased to announce that on October 14 at 6:00 PM, the Hon. Giorgio Mulè, Vice President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, will inaugurate two major exhibitions at the Institute’s Park Avenue headquarters.
The first, 1946: The Birth of the Republic. The Constituent Assembly at Montecitorio, marks the 80th anniversary of the institutional referendum in which Italians chose between monarchy and republic, and of the election of the Constituent Assembly.
The second presents the first-ever United States exhibition of Mary Magdalene in Ecstasy (c. 1606–1610) by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
Together, the exhibitions explore Italy through two pivotal moments of transformation and renewal: the choice of a republic and the process that led to a new Constitution, and the vision of an artist who revolutionized modern painting.
Both exhibitions will remain on view through November 6, 2026.
