The Italian Cultural Institute of New York, hosting the fifth edition of the Peperoncino Jazz Festival New York Session – Italianity, presents a special live performance by legendary jazz artists Rachel Z and Omar Hakim, joined by bassist Jonathan Toscano.
Together, Rachel Z and Omar Hakim have developed a long-standing artistic partnership, creating a vibrant blend of rock, jazz, fusion, and world music. For this intimate performance, they will be joined by their close friend Jonathan Toscano, a New York bassist of Italian heritage, bringing the audience an up-close encounter with world-class jazz, conversation, and cultural exchange.
The event will also include a tasting of typical Calabrian products and wines, highlighting the strong connection between music, Italian identity, and the cultural heritage of Calabria. an identity, and the cultural heritage of Calabria.
BIO
Rachel Z, born Rachel Nicolazzo and proud of her Calabrian roots, is an internationally acclaimed pianist and keyboardist whose career bridges jazz, fusion, rock, and world music. She studied at the New England Conservatory and has collaborated with major artists including Wayne Shorter, Steps Ahead, Pino Daniele, Al Di Meola, Marcus Miller, Stanley Clarke, George Coleman, Bobby Watson, and Peter Gabriel. She also co-wrote the Grammy-winning song Tokyo Blue with saxophonist Najee.
Omar Hakim is one of the most influential drummers and session musicians of the last four decades. Known for his extraordinary versatility, he has collaborated with artists ranging from Miles Davis to Madonna, David Bowie, Sting, Dire Straits, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock, Chaka Khan, Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Bryan Ferry, Bobby McFerrin, and many others.
