Artificial intelligence is forcing us to rethink the future of medicine. It promises to become an increasingly powerful tool alongside radiologists, but it also raises a more radical question: could it one day replace them, at least in some of their functions? AI can already help identify rare diseases that a physician may never have encountered in clinical practice. And then there is telemedicine, increasingly available at our fingertips through our smartphones.
The two speakers explore how AI can contribute to progress in healthcare from two concrete and easily understandable perspectives, reflecting a genuine difference of view about where the greatest advances in medicine may come from. On one side, the phone in our pocket: data generated by patients through smartphones, wearable devices, and other everyday technologies. On the other, the magnet in the basement: the physics and engineering that enable an MRI scanner to see more, and see better, while using fewer resources.
Two different paths, one fundamental question: where and how can artificial intelligence make its greatest contribution to the future of medicine?

Artificial intelligence carries risks, some of them serious, which we do not intend to overlook; but history has shown that technological innovation cannot simply be halted, so the more productive question is how this technology can be governed and directed towards human progress rather than allowed to undermine it. Each evening therefore brings together two speakers with distinct – and sometimes contrasting – perspectives, in a conversation meant to be substantive, lively, and accessible to a general audience.
The format calls for Luciano Floridi to open each event with a fifteen-minute introduction to frame the topic. This is followed by a panel moderated by the Director of Italian Cultural Institute, Claudio Pagliara. The discussion will be followed by an extensive Q&A with the audience.
Bio

Luciano Floridi è John K. Castle Professor in the Practice of Cognitive Science e Direttore fondatore del Digital Ethics Center presso la Yale University. È inoltre Professore di Sociologia della Cultura e della Comunicazione presso il Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche dell’Università di Bologna. Riconosciuto come una delle voci più autorevoli della filosofia contemporanea, secondo Scopus è il filosofo vivente più citato al mondo. Ha aperto nuove prospettive nella filosofia e nell’etica dell’informazione, diventando uno dei principali interpreti della rivoluzione digitale, grazie ai suoi contributi fondamentali alla definizione dei quadri normativi della società digitale. La sua produzione scientifica comprende oltre 400 pubblicazioni e spazia dalla filosofia dell’informazione all’etica digitale, dall’etica dell’intelligenza artificiale alla filosofia della tecnologia e alla storia della filosofia. Numerose sue opere sono state tradotte e pubblicate in tutto il mondo. Tra i suoi libri più recenti figurano The Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (Oxford University Press, 2023) e The Green and the Blue: Naive Ideas to Improve Politics in the Digital Age (Wiley, 2023). Deborah Estrin is a Professor of Computer Science at Cornell Tech in New York City where she serves as the Associate Dean for Impact, and is an Affiliate Faculty at Weill Cornell Medicine. Following on her earliest work in Internet routing and later distributed sensing for environmental monitoring, her research shifted to digitally-enabled longitudinal care leveraging mobile, wearable, and AI technologies. Estrin’s honors include: the IEEE Internet Award (2017), MacArthur Fellowship (2018), and the IEEE John von Neumann Medal (2022). She is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2007), the National Academy of Engineering (2009), and the National Academy of Medicine (2019)

Riccardo Lattanzi is an Associate Professor of Radiology, Electrical and Computer Engineering at the New York University. He also serves as the Director of training for the Center for Advanced Imaging Innovation and Research (CAI2R). His research work lies at the boundary between physics, engineering and medicine. He investigates fundamental principles involving the interactions of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields with biological tissue in order to develop new techniques and technologies improve the diagnostic power of magnetic resonance imaging. He won the ISMRM I.I. Rabi Young Investigator Award, received an NSF CAREER award, a Fulbright scholarship, was selected as an Aspen Junior Fellow of the Aspen Institute Italia, a Young Leader of the Council for the United States and Italy. Dr. Lattanzi received his laurea degree in electronic engineering from the University of Bologna, his Master of Science in electrical engineering and computer science from MIT, and his Ph.D. in medical engineering and medical physics from the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology.
