The Eight Mountains by Paolo Cognetti
The Eight Mountains is a coming-of-age novel written by Paolo Cognetti, published in 2016 and winner of the Premio Strega Giovani in 2017. The book is divided into three parts: Childhood Mountain, which tells the story of the beginning of the friendship between Pietro and Bruno; The House of Reconciliation, where the two friends build a mountain hut together high in the mountains; Winter of a Friend, which recounts the growing distance between the two friends, now adults, and what happens at the mountain hut. The main themes are the father-son relationship, male friendship, childhood, and the mountains, with the latter emerging as the true protagonist of the work.
The book club meeting will be followed by the screening of the movie, titled as the book, directed by Felix Van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch, as part of the Hidden Gems of Italy | The Eight Mountains (2022) film festival. The film was presented at the 75th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize. The screening will be followed by a Q&A featuring Eleonora Berta, Director of the CAI Mountain Museum in Turin, in conversation with the Director of ICI NY, Claudio Pagliara.
