The exhibition is dedicated to the great Maestro and to his career of production designer, art director, costume designer and director. Rich in videos and photographic images, and it will remain opened through July 14, 2024.
The Italian Cultural Institute pays tribute to the highly valued and worldwide recognized Italian artist, honoring him with an anthological exhibition.
Winning an academy Award for Best Production Design for the movie “A Room with a View” by James Ivory, Gianni Quaranta has collected illustrious prizes, nominations and international acknowledgements, crossing different fields of art. A polished curator of the classical style, he has masterfully known how to merge it with modern elements, creating new and unexpected interconnections.
From the productive and long collaboration with Franco Zeffirelli, who has seen him as a top-notch production designer in “Jesus of Nazareth”, to Bernardo Bertolucci, in the creation “1900”, to “The Legend of the Holy Drinker” by Ermanno Olmi, Quaranta has collaborated with James Ivory, Paul Mazursky, Herbert Ross, Paul Schrader, Lina Wertmuller and Gerard Corbiau, just to quote some of the eminent movies and directors for which he has lent his talent and his creative flair.
His advertisements set designs are iconic, most of all, Mulino Bianco, part of a model which can be considered also linguistic, other than collaborations with the most important brands in various fields.
His art of directing is of extreme interest: in this the philological respect for the libretto and the historical setting are placed side by side to innovative elements able to provide an original and even contemporary interpretation of the personality of the characters without altering the original contextualization, as “his” Carmen and Don José.
Recreating works of architecture and design that are refined, the component becomes a pivotal element and reveals itself in its original state, a heavenly naturalistic environment, covertly exotic, in a balanced play between architectural elements, luxuriant vines and lively birds, designed by Quaranta.
“Gianni Quaranta. Visions” intends to summarize the various fields of activity of the multifaceted artist with a journey through his creations in cinema, opera, theatre, ballet, advertisement, exhibitions and events and architecture and design.
Curator: Giuliana Poleggi, who has collaborated with the artist for a decade.
“Gianni Quaranta represents the Italian genius in all its aspects: from the ability of advancing in a global perspective to the loyalty of his national roots, from the aesthetic dimension to the technical one, from the Art’s charming power to the market’s communicative practicality.”, states the Director of the Italian Cultural Institute.
“I am honored for this tribute and am grateful to the Italian Cultural Institute and its Director, Prof. Fabio Finotti, who has deeply wanted this exhibition. This event in New York is a continuum with the city for me: it is right here, indeed, on the Metropolitan Opera House’s stage, that my set design of the Aida has been performed for over 35 years. And it is always in New York that the scenes that I designed for the ballet “Giselle” for the American Ballet Theatre, originally performed by Alessandra Ferri and Michail Baryšniko, are still staged since more than 40 years. It is a deep and long love between me and this city.” – Gianni Quaranta.

“Fare Cinema” (17-23 June, 2024), is a global initiative aimed at promoting Italian films around the world. Launched in 2018, it is a week-long event held annually organized all over the world at Embassies, Consular Offices and Italian Cultural Institutes. It has focused in particular on the numerous professions in the industry, i.e. to the many professionals – actors, directors, writers, cinematographers, set designers, composers, costume designers, make-up artists, editors, special effects technicians … – who make up the complex machine of film production and who, in front of or behind the camera, contribute to the success of Italian cinema at home and abroad.
